hiraeth (n.): A homesickness for a home to which you cannot return, a home which maybe never was; the nostalgia, the yearning, the grief for the lost places of your past. Word origin – Welsh
This work is a continuation of my long-held interest in how particular devices within digital video and sound might speak to my own lived experiences. I am attempting to use deliberately erratic, unclear, handheld footage, to examine my increasingly complex relationships with notions of identity, place and home. Relationships that I find myself grappling with more frequently, leading to sensations that are felt viscerally and intensely. Presented as a full room, immersive installation, Hiraeth speaks to the overwhelming and inescapable nature of these sensations.
Hiraeth was filmed on Nukunu land, on the artist’s family farm (the Mid-North region, South Australia). This work has been generously supported by the City of Adelaide and Adelaide Central School of Art.
